Scuba Diving Hikkaduwa

Hikkaduwa is the prime spot for scuba diving in the south west of Sri Lanka. Renowned for its house reef which is the first marine sanctuary in Sri Lanka In Hikkaduwa we can easily reach many historic shipwrecks nearby.Our dive centre is situated on the beach just metres from the shore and student divers can complete their confined water training in the safety of the house reef, where they get to experience sea conditions and colourful marine life.

Poseidon

Poseidon Diving Station first opened here in 1973, and became the first PADI center in Hikkaduwa. We swiftly gained a reputation for being the safest, most professional center with a great team of friendly and helpful staff. Our Hikkaduwa dive centre runs Discover Scuba Diving programs for people who have never tried diving before. You can also complete all PADI diving courses here. Open Water Diver, Advanced Open Water Diver, Rescue Diver and Dive Master courses are run on demand, with new courses starting every day. We use small group teaching to provide support and make sure all our students are given the time they need to become confident, safe divers. We have full Nitrox availability in Hikkaduwa.Twice a year we run an Instructor Development Course for divemasters who wish to become a PADI diving instructor.

Accommodation

The centre also has its own guesthouse, with rooms on the beach ranging from simple economy rooms to air-conditioned, sea front rooms. Conch: 12-21m Shipwrecks The Conch is a steam-powered oil tanker. One of the first oil tankers in the world, it was built in 1892 in Stockton for Shell. She weighed 3555ton and was on a journey from Novorossisk to Madras when on 2nd of June 1903 she hit a rock and sank. The wreck is well preserved, with penetration possible into the cabin which is filled with cave-dwellers. Visibility is stable because of the rocky bottom. Good for groupers, napoleons, queen angelfish and all other reef fishes.
Earl of Shaftesbury 14m Shipwrecks One of our oldest wrecks this ship dates from the 1820s, a steel 4 mast sailing ship it sank ollowing a fire on board. It is lying on a sandy bottom, very interesting wreck. You can see some special native sweetlips and stingrays, groups of silver batfish and schools of Fosters barracuda.
Alliance 23m Shipwrecks The Alliance is a British wooden sailboat that sank carrying a cargo of charcoal. Lying on a sandy bottom it is ideal for all kinds of reef fishes.
Rangoon 30m Shipwrecks The Rangoon is a steam ship built in 1863 by Samuda Bros, London. It was part of the P & O fleet and did regular trips from Suez to Calcutta. The ship weighed 1776 ton and had 400hp engines, it was captained by GF Henry. One of our most beautiful wrecks, the Rangoon is upright in full sailing position. Teeming with marine life with anything possible to see. Trips are done as part of a day trip to Galle.
Arcturus 18m Shipwrecks The Arcturus is a British steam ship wreck built in 1870. Lying on a large rocky bottom area called Mada Gala, the wreck has some beautiful marine life and lots of soft corals.
Crispigi Cross 16m Shipwrecks This is a boat from Panama carrying rice and paint that sank in the 19 80’s in front of Galle hospital. Penetration is possible into the stern. The massive engine is still in place and there are lots of fish to be seen.
Orestes 16m Shipwrecks British steam ship that sank carrying a cargo of bricks. Lying on a sandy bottom near Galle harbor. It is possible to find wine and soda bottles around the site.
No name II 24m Shipwrecks We have not been able to find any information on this ship, other than that it belonged to the Ocean steam ship Company in Liverpool and built in 1866. It is lying on a sandy bottom in front of Galle harbor. Lots of reef fishes and possible to see eagle rays.
Lord Nelson 18m Shipwrecks Modern boat that sank in a storm in 2000. Was carrying a cargo of cement. Penetration is possible in most of the wreck and lots of reef fishes.

Poseidon Beach Hotel

We provide accommodation for our course followers.Poseidon Diving station has a 17 room hotel and restaurant on the beach. We have three economy rooms with twin beds, ceiling fan, mosquito net and shower room, 2 standard rooms with hot showers, 9 rooms can be booked with air-conditioning and solar-powered hot water, including two beach end rooms. Downstairs we have a family room with 2 adjoining twin-bedded rooms sharing a bathroom and single entrance and a three bedded rooms with AC and hot water Hotel guests will have access to free WiFi.

Built in 1926 it has been carefully restored and boasts beautiful original features and antiques. 11 people can stay in 6 bedrooms. The first floor has a suite of large bedroom with 7 foot bed, living area and bathroom with shower and slipper bath.

The ground floor has 5 bedrooms around a central atrium and living area. 2 rooms have ensuite shower rooms and there is a large bathroom with shower and slipper bath. At the rear of the house is a large dining area which seats 10 people, looking out over the swimming pool. There is a fully equipped kitchen with American fridge-freezer, washing machine and range cooker.

On arrival the house will have a small supply of bottled water, milk, tea and coffee. It is self-catering but a house chef can be arranged at a small cost. It sits in a half acre private garden with mature fruit trees, landscaped lawns and outdoor ambalama with barbecue and seating.

The pool is 4 ½ feet deep throughout with jacuzzi jet seating at one end and stair entry. The train station, bus stand and town centre are just a 5 minute walk away.
